Job summary

Morgan County Schools is seeking a Special Education Aide to support classroom objectives and provide participation opportunities for students receiving special services.

Under supervision, you will assist with instructional activities, reinforce IE P goals, attend professional development, and help maintain a positive learning environment across various settings.

Job Description


Title: Special Education Aide


Immediate Supervisor: School Principal/Assigned Certified Teacher


Minimum Qualifications:


  1. Good physical and emotional health, including ability to lift as well as to implement a behavioral management program with students of varying ages and sizes.


  2. Effective interpersonal communication skills.


  3. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board of Education may find appropriate and acceptable.



Essential Functions:


  1. Assists with classroom activities, assignments, and/or materials under the direction of a supervising teacher for the purpose of supporting and reinforcing classroom objectives as well as providing an opportunity for all students receiving special services to participate in classroom activities.


  2. Assists, under the supervision of the assigned teacher, instruction to students in a variety of individual and group activities for the purpose of reinforcing instructional objectives; implementing individual education plans (IEPs); and enhancing opportunities for all students to succeed.


  3. Attends meetings and in-service presentations (e.g. emergency procedures, training modules, system & local professional development, etc.) for the purpose of gaining information relative to job functions.


  4. Implements, under the supervision of the assigned teacher, behavioral intervention plans (BIP) for the purpose of presenting and/or reinforcing learning skills, concepts, strategies, etc.


  5. Monitors students with special needs across all settings (e.g. classroom, field trips, lunchroom, playground, during life enrichment activities, etc.) for the purpose of providing a safe and positive learning environment.


  6. Assists teachers in preparing instructional materials for classroom use.


  7. Maintains an acceptable level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students.


  8. Assists the classroom teacher in the implementation of the IEP and in preparing instructional materials.


  9. Performs necessary housekeeping duties not assigned to the custodial staff.


  10. Performs other duties as assigned by the teacher, and/or principal, coordinator or System Nurse.


  11. Possesses adequate physical mobility including, but not limited to performing the following functions for students:




  1. Transferring from one physical location to another utilizing technique as directed by the physical therapist.


  2. Toileting


  3. Diapering or changing clothing


  4. Bathing and other personal hygiene functions


  5. Feeding


  6. Transitioning students from one area to another in wheelchairs or lifts


  7. Performing required physical manipulation, as prescribed by a physician, or recommended by a physical or an occupational therapist.


  8. Care and cleaning of equipment.


  9. Transitioning students to and from class.


  10. Facilitating recreational activities.


  11. Others as specified by the teacher or principal.



Other Attributes:


  1. Is well-groomed and appropriately dressed


  2. Project and modulate voice in a classroom environment with and/or without the use of electronic aides


  3. Represent the school system, school, and all school personnel in a positive manner at all times

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on Evaluation of Classified Personnel.
