Job summary

SMS Mill Services, LLC in Portage, Indiana, is seeking a Cost Manager to lead financial planning, forecasting, and reporting for a $150M global industrial services organization. You will partner with Operations to analyze performance and drive ROI across multiple sites.

The role requires 5–7 years in finance, a Bachelor’s in accounting/finance, advanced Excel, ERP proficiency, and willingness to travel up to 50%. CPA or MBA is a plus but not required.

  • Experience in a heavy industrial service environment is preferred.
  • 5-7 years’ experience in finance or accounting with at least 3 years in a financial planning role.

About Us:

SMS Mill Services is a privately held company based in Portage, Indiana. Since its founding in 2005, SMS has grown by expanding into scrap processing, steel mill services, and ship and oil rig recycling. SMS Mill Services provides efficient, cost-effective scrap management, slag handling, and support services for steel-producing mills. SMS is an industry leader committed to serving its customers and community responsibly, efficiently, and professionally while maintaining environmentally safe practices.

Role:

The Company is looking to hire a business leader to meet growth needs of the Finance team. Directly reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, this role will serve as financial support for the operations of a $150M global industrial services organization.

Responsibilities:
  • General financial support to one of the Regional Operational Directors.
  • Analyze financial performance and communicate to Operations and Senior Management; interpret financial results for users who must make economic or business decisions.
  • Design, build, and maintain detailed internal reporting to drive business awareness across global operations.
  • Own the quarterly forecast and annual budget process for the Region.
  • Develop and implement KPIs and dashboards for Operations support.
  • Working closely with Operations leaders, develop weekly forecasts and lead weekly forecast calls and communicate variance analysis.
  • Develop standardized monthly financial reporting for monthly Operations Reviews.
  • Build out new processes and procedures to improve efficiencies across the organization.
  • Identify financial improvement opportunities and collaborate with Operations on remediation plans.
  • Track financial impact of new initiatives and ensure proper recording of Capex and Depreciation by site.
  • Implement ROI analysis/process:
    • New product/service ROIs; review actual performance vs ROI
    • Creation of AFI’s (Authority for investment) to support CAPEX including justification and ROI calculations
  • Analyze potential acquisition target companies’ financial performance and support due diligence efforts.
  • Support the month-end and year-end accounting close activities ensuring accurate and complete site and regional profit and loss.
  • Collaborate and communicate with all levels of the organization, including other analysts, operational managers, and the executive team.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance
  • Must be prepared to learn this business spending time working with operations in a heavy industrial business
  • Experience in a heavy industrial service environment
  • CPA, MBA not required but would be a plus
  • 5-7 years’ experience in finance or accounting with at least 3 years in a financial planning role
  • Advanced Excel, Power Points and 3-statement financial modeling skills required
  • Analytical with strong IT skills specifically in ERP and related reporting/business intelligence systems
  • Ability to travel 50% to company locations
Physical Demands:

Ability to walk more than 100 yards; stand as needed; lift and carry no more than 30 lbs.; climb stairs and/or ladders; stooping; crawling; reaching; handling; pushing; pulling; twisting; kneeling; squatting; seeing; speaking; hearing; problem solving, discretion and independent judgment; regular and dependable attendance.

Working Conditions:

Generally working within a professional office environment using electronic and other company resources as essential tools to complete required work; travel to supplier and/or internal customer locations will be required.
