Job description

We are seeking a detail-oriented and analytical Cost Accountant to join an established manufacturing organization. This position will play an important role in financial reporting, cost analysis, inventory management, and forecasting to support informed business decisions and operational efficiency.

The ideal candidate will have a solid accounting background within a manufacturing environment, strong Excel skills, and the ability to interpret financial data to provide meaningful insights and recommendations. This individual will work closely with accounting leadership and operational teams to evaluate manufacturing costs, support budgeting and forecasting initiatives, and identify opportunities for improved cost management.

This is an excellent opportunity for an accountant who enjoys working with numbers beyond traditional general ledger responsibilities and wants to contribute to the financial performance of a manufacturing operation.

Key Responsibilities
Cost Accounting & Inventory Management
  • Analyze manufacturing costs, including raw materials, labor, overhead, and production expenses, to monitor profitability and identify cost variances.
  • Track and reconcile inventory values, including raw materials, work in process (WIP), and finished goods.
  • Support inventory control processes, physical inventories, and cycle counts to ensure accurate financial reporting.
  • Evaluate product costs, cost of goods sold (COGS), and gross margins to identify trends and opportunities for improvement.
  • Review and maintain manufacturing cost standards and assist with updating product costs as needed.
Financial Forecasting & Budgeting
  • Prepare financial forecasts and assist in developing annual budgets, with a focus on inventory, raw materials, production costs, and operational expenses.
  • Analyze historical spending, production activity, and financial trends to project future costs and anticipated budget needs.
  • Partner with operations and management to provide data-driven recommendations regarding inventory purchases, material spending, and resource allocation.
  • Prepare financial impact analyses to evaluate proposed purchases, operational changes, and other business decisions.
  • Monitor actual financial performance against budgets and forecasts, identifying variances and recommending adjustments.
  • Assist with monthly and year-end closing activities, including general ledger reconciliations, journal entries, and financial reporting.
  • Prepare monthly financial reports and analysis for accounting leadership and management.
  • Support internal and external audits by preparing schedules, reconciling accounts, and providing supporting documentation.
  • Analyze financial data to identify discrepancies, cost trends, and opportunities to improve reporting accuracy.
  • Collaborate with accounting, manufacturing, and operational teams to ensure accurate cost tracking and financial information.
Qualifications
Required
  • Minimum of 2 years of accounting experience within a manufacturing environment, with demonstrated knowledge of cost accounting principles.
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing costs, inventory valuation, cost of goods sold, and general ledger accounting.
  • Experience with financial forecasting, budgeting, monthly reporting, and month-end close processes.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including proficiency with pivot tables, formulas, and financial data analysis.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret financial information and communicate meaningful insights.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with accounting leadership and operational teams to support sound financial decisions.
  • Excellent attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to manage multiple priorities.
Preferred
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Experience working in a standard cost manufacturing environment.
  • Experience with Power BI for financial reporting, data analysis, or dashboards.
  • Experience with Global Shop Solutions or another manufacturing ERP/MRP system.
  • Experience collaborating with production, purchasing, or engineering teams on cost analysis and financial planning.
What We're Looking For

We are looking for someone who understands the financial side of manufacturing and can translate numbers into actionable recommendations. The right candidate will be comfortable digging into cost data, developing forecasts, and helping operational teams make informed decisions about inventory, materials, and spending.

While strong technical accounting skills are important, equally valuable is the ability to think analytically, ask the right questions, and proactively identify ways to improve cost management and financial planning.

  • This position offers the opportunity to work alongside experienced accounting leadership while making a meaningful contribution to the organization's financial and operational success.
