Job summary

Alamance Community College seeks a full-time Cosmetology instructor to deliver high‑quality classroom and lab instruction at the Dillingham Center in Burlington, NC. You will teach multiple cosmetology topics, maintain student records, and support advising and program outcomes.

Required independent teaching demonstrated by licensure in NC Cosmetology and Instructor credentials, with professional appearance and strong communication.

Minimum Qualifications

Required: 1. Associate degree from a regionally accredited institution or demonstrate competencies in teaching specific cosmetology courses and/or equivalent teaching experience

2. Current NC Cosmetology Instructor license

3. Current NC Cosmetologist license

4. Able to manually demonstrate cosmetology practical skills and teach all required cosmetology topics.

5. Provide instruction that fulfills the requirements of the North Carolina State Board of Cosmetic Arts.

6. Dresses professionally and arrives on time for classes.

7. Demonstrated ability to build relationships within an education setting; plan, organize, and implement programs and services; and provide tracking and assessment to ensure quality, required

8. Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills (both written and oral).

9. Demonstrated sensitivity to and appreciation of ethnic and cultural diversity and a record of building consensus and reaching out to various and diverse stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred: 10. Post-secondary teaching experience, preferably in a community college environment.

11. Experience with Ellucian Colleague and advising and registering students

12. Minimum of five years of experience working in a salon environment as a cosmetologist.

13. Minimum of 2 years teaching experience in a community college setting

14. Knowledge of Milady Standard Cosmetology curriculum and current knowledge of the New CIMA curriculum

15. Familiar with Discovery Pro software.

16. Ability to communicate effectively with the Department Head, co-workers and students.

17. Advance training in color theory, natural hair, haircutting, esthetician, and nail technology.

18. Knowledgeable in all aspects of the student experience to include coaching, mentoring, advising, student/career services, and progression, preferred

19. Understanding and commitment to the mission and principles of community colleges

20. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff and students as well as other internal and external stakeholders.

21. Commitment to using data to support informed decision-making processes.

22. Proven ability to develop successful strategies for enrollment growth, student success and student retention.

Description

Faculty are expected to work 40 hours per week, with a minimum of 20-24 on campus hours, Monday through Friday (position may include day and/or evening work hours). There will be times when faculty will work more than the minimum on campus hours when advising and registering students. Focused on student success, faculty support the college’s mission by facilitating student learning in and outside of the classroom, through high-quality instruction,
academic support, and informed advising.

Example of Duties

Providing appropriate and effective instruction.

Teaching classes per the College’s teaching load and formula in combinations including day, evening, weekend, off-campus and online as the College requires.

Providing relevant learning opportunities that promote student engagement and retention.

Staying current in their field and in teaching methodology.

Creating meaningful assessments and evaluating student work according to departmental standards.

Keeping accurate student records, including course attendance to enhance retention and success.

Being available to students during office or lab hours for assistance.

Providing accurate and informative advising

Maintaining accessible office or lab hours.

Understanding College policies and procedures, degree requirements, and transfer agreements.

Providing students with current information regarding career opportunities, as appropriate.

Being informed about college services and support for students.

Recruiting students, including participation in open houses, college events, and recruitment fairs.

Engaging in continuous improvement efforts.

Building positive, effective relationships with internal and external partners.

Participating in student club activities and events.

Assisting with accreditation/regulatory reports.

Assisting with live projects as relevant.

Maintains licensure /certifications and through professional development activities stays well-informed of advancements and changes within the field of
Cosmetology.

Serve on College Committees

Performs other duties as assigned that support the College mission and initiatives

Permanent full-time faculty (who are not department heads or otherwise required to work 12 months) receive contracts for nine-month periods within a fiscal year and may be contracted on a month-to-month basis in summer for instructional needs.
