Job description

DEFINITION:

The Cosmetology Instructor provides high-quality classroom, laboratory, and hands-on instruction in cosmetology, esthetics, and nail technology programs. The instructor will prepare students for licensure and successful careers in the beauty and wellness industry by delivering industry-aligned instruction, evaluating student learning, and promoting professional standards and customer service excellence.

The instructor assists with the planning, organization, operation, and administration of the student clinic, ensuring students gain practical experience in a professional salon environment. In collaboration with the Program Director, the instructor supports clinic operations through supply ordering, inventory control, equipment and product management, and maintenance of instructional and clinic resources. The instructor will support student success, maintain compliance with North Carolina Board of Cosmetic Art Examiners regulations, assist with state board inspections and recordkeeping requirements, and build partnerships with industry professionals to ensure program relevance, regulatory compliance, and workforce readiness.

Faculty, whether designated as curriculum or continuing education, may be assigned instructional hours in either curriculum or continuing education courses as necessary to meet minimum workload requirements and institutional needs.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:

• Receives general and technical supervision from the Cosmetology Program Director
• Exercises no supervision

ESSENTIAL AND OTHER IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS STATEMENTS:

Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Plan, direct, and participate in the instruction for the Cosmetology, Esthetics and Nail Tech programs; develop supplemental materials and tests; maintain accurate records of student attendance and performance.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies, and priorities for the Cosmetology, Esthetics, and Nail Tech programs including curriculum development and instructional coordination.
• Continuously monitor and evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of service delivery methods and procedures; assess and monitor workload, administrative and support systems, and internal reporting relationships; identify opportunities for improvement and review with the program director.
• Develop and draft materials necessary for instruction with the direction and approval of the program director.
• Maintain a safe, organized, and effective learning environment by overseeing laboratories, equipment, tools, and training aids; ensure compliance with college policies, industry regulations, and applicable safety standards.
• Advise and mentor students regarding academic progress, career pathways, employability skills, industry certifications, and transfer or employment opportunities within the Cosmetology, Esthetics, and Nail Tech programs.
• Work days, nights, or weekends as needed.

OTHER IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS:

• Assess material, supply, and equipment needs for the program; submit requests for the ordering of supplies. Help maintain an inventory of equipment and supplies.
• Participate in the program efforts to recruit and retain students; coordinate the development, review, and revision of program publications, publicity and other community relations’ activities.
• Work with industry partners and faculty to ensure our programs are teaching the most up to date techniques and the latest industry trends.
• Serve on college committees, attend required meetings, participate in faculty development activities, and support departmental, divisional, and institutional initiatives.
• Ensure the adherence to safe and appropriate work practices and procedures.
• Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of:

• Organizational and management practices as applied to the planning, analysis and evaluation of programs, policies and operational needs.
• Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes and regulations.
• Principles and procedures of academic and instructional program development and administration in the area of assignment.
• Principles and practices of curriculum development and instructional strategies.
• Current trends, research and development in the area of assignment.

Ability To:

• Interpret and apply college goals, objectives, policies, procedures, rules and regulations.

Minimum Education/Training:

• Education or Certification(s) or industry experience in the field
• Cosmetology License
• Cosmetology Instructor License
