Position Summary

Under direction of Transportation Supervisor, performs a full range of skilled mechanical maintenance, diagnostic, inspection and repair duties on trucks, automobiles, school buses, small engines, mowers, and other District vehicles. Must hold and maintain an inspection certification. This position will supervise up to five other mechanics in transportation.

Duties

• Supervise team and perform all listed duties alongside the mechanics team for transportation.
• Inspect, diagnose, overhaul, adjust and repair gas- and diesel-powered buses, trucks, automobiles, and other power equipment.
• Perform general overhaul, installation, repair, replacement and adjustment of bearings, ignitions, fuel injection, transmissions, differentials, axles, steering mechanisms, drive shafts, fenders, radiators, and front end and rear suspension systems.
• Perform a prescribed preventative maintenance program on the bus fleet and trucks and automobiles.
• Road test vehicles after work has been completed.
• Inspect school buses and sign forms indicating compliance with State requirements.
• Perform work in adherence to safe work practices and procedures, including maintaining equipment as required.
• Patch and install seat cover and other accessories on buses.
• Operate a steam cleaner to clean buses, automobiles, and trucks.
• Maintain inventory of parts and supplies, contact vendors for quality supplies.
• Maintain a clean and orderly work area; maintain and repair shop facilities and equipment.
• Maintain records of vehicle identification, data, mileage, and nature of each inspection, maintenance, lubrication, and repair performed.
• Maintain inspection certification throughout employment.
• Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
• Use Cummins, Allison, and IC Software.
• Drive a school bus as needed.
• Observe all district policies.

Knowledge

• Inspection, maintenance, overhaul, repair, and adjustment of gas- and diesel-powered equipment.
• Operation and repair of automotive and school bus diagnostic and repair equipment and tools.
• Repair and adjustment of fuel, ignition, electrical and cooling systems and chassis; knowledge of air brake and suspension systems, EPA emissions.
• Acetylene and arc welding, electrical work on motorized vehicles and equipment.
• Recycling and disposal of hazardous waste from motorized vehicles.
• Operational hazards and standard safety practices.
• Record keeping principles and procedures.
• Safe driving principles and practices.
• Operation of diagnostic, maintenance and repair equipment safely and effectively.
• Operating a school bus and motor vehicle safely.
• Operating modern office equipment, including computer equipment.

Education and Experience

Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. Typical experience includes:

• Four years as a mechanic, including experience with school buses, gas and diesel engines, hydraulic systems and air brake systems.
• 2–5 years supervisory experience required.
• Certificates or proof of continuing education in the mechanical field (e.g., Cummins software, Caterpillar, Allison transmissions software, welding, IC software).
• Valid driver’s license.
• Inspection certification maintained.

Essential Physical Demands
