Job summary

State of South Carolina is seeking a Recruiting Sergeant to lead correctional officer recruitment from contact through onboarding. You will screen applicants, conduct interviews, and coordinate testing and documentation to ensure compliance with agency standards.

You will oversee pre-employment requirements, orientation, and initial training activities while maintaining hiring records and reporting trends to leadership.

Qualifications

• A high school diploma and relevant experience.
• A bachelor’s degree may substitute for the required experience.
• 18 months experience in correctional, security, military, or police work is preferred.
• Must be certified by the SCDC Training Academy and complete the basic supervisory course within six months.

Responsibilities

• Serve as the primary lead for correctional officer recruitment from initial contact through onboarding.
• Screen applications for minimum qualifications and guide candidates through the hiring steps.
• Conduct interviews and coordinate interviews with leadership (e.g., warden).
• Coordinate testing, documentation, and pre-employment requirements such as background checks and medical screenings.
• Oversee new-hire orientation, equipment issuance, and initial job shadowing.
• Track applicant progress, maintain hiring records, and report recruitment trends to leadership.
• Coordinate with HR, training staff, and leadership to meet staffing needs.
