Job description

The Department of Corrections (DOC) is seeking a Corrections Plumbing Trade Instructor who is energized by teaching and practical problem-solving. This position lets you lead structured training that supports the efficient operation of the State Correctional Institution(SCI) at Somerset. You will help inmates build discipline, trade knowledge, and productive work habits. This opportunity brings purpose, stability, and the chance to support real vocational progress.

This position provides classroom and hands-on instruction in the plumbing trade to support skill development and facility operations at SCI Somerset. The role focuses on guiding inmates through structured learning in standard trade practices.

• Training Instruction: Teach plumbing practices for systems including water distribution, drainage, heating, fire sprinklers, and building plumbing
• Work Crew Direction: Lead inmate work crews, assign daily schedules, and inspect completed plumbing tasks
• Tool Management: Issue, inventory, and account for tools and materials used during training and work assignments
• Supply Planning: Determine required materials, submit purchase requests, and prepare for plumbing projects
• Instruction Methods: Select teaching approaches based on project needs, inmate skill levels, and learning progress
• Record Keeping: Maintain training documentation, attendance lists, and assignment details

Work Schedule and Additional Information

• Full-time employment, 40 hours per week
• Work hours are 7:15 AM to 3:15 PM, Monday - Friday.
• This position is eligible for full retirement benefits at age 50 or 55.
• Telework:You will not have the option to telework in this position.
• Salary:Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $53,036.00 (before taxes).

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements

• Five years of experience in the inspection, maintenance, repair, assembly, and installation of pipes, fittings, and fixtures used in heating, water, and drainage systems; or
• Completion of an approved apprenticeship in the plumbing trade; or
• An equivalent combination of experience and training which includes one year of journey level work in the plumbing trade.

• Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA is required.
