Job summary

COUNTY OF LEHIGH is seeking a Corrections Maintenance role to support daily plant operations in the Lehigh County Department of Corrections. The position involves building maintenance, heating, plumbing, and HVAC tasks within a large facility exceeding 1000 beds, with supervision supported by Maintenance Supervisors and the Institutional Maintenance Manager.

Qualifications

• Ability to learn and understand the rules and regulations relating to the operation of a correctional facility.
• Ability to quickly learn the methods and techniques used in the control and custody of inmates, including appropriate use of force and defensive tactics.
• Ability to supervise the activities of inmates in custody. Ability to remain alert at all times and react quickly and calmly in emergencies. Ability to follow both verbal and written instructions as well as keep records and write clear and concise reports.

Responsibilities

• Receives direction on projects that may be occurring in the facility from supervisors; responds to work orders created by staff regarding repairs that need to be made; and maintains support of the daily physical plant operation of the facility. Consistently enforces policy and procedure. Responds to building maintenance emergency situations, takes direction as needed and participates in the implementation of emergency plans.
• Receives and resolves maintenance issues in the facility.
• Directly addresses issues and solves problems before escalation to higher administrative levels. Supports the repair of facility systems with a variety of outside service personnel and service contracts through escort and assistance.
• Ensures maintenance tools and supplies are properly inventoried, logged, stored, controlled and issued.
• Coordinates with other facility departments and offices to solve problems. Responsible for supporting the cleanliness and function of all areas of the institution. Responds to Level 2 emergencies in the facility. Communicates professionally and respectfully with inmates, staff, volunteers, and visitors.
