Job summary

Chatham County is seeking a Detention Officer to perform protective service work in the Detention Center, processing inmates, maintaining security, transporting inmates, and supporting supervision under moderate guidance.

This role requires handling logs, reports, facility checks, and coordination with other agencies. The position includes duties such as escorting inmates to court, distributing meals, and assisting in staff training as needed.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Ability to enforce institutional rules firmly and fairly.
• Ability to detect potential behavior problems of inmates.
• Ability to carry out oral and written directions accurately.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, inmates and the general public.

Responsibilities

• Ensures the safety and security of inmates within the Chatham County Detention Center.
• Controls inmates by performing routine facility checks, head counts, conflicts resolution, cell searches, and removal of dangerous inmates as necessary.
• Receives and processes inmates into custody, conducts searches, manages property, and assists investigations.
• Participates in daily shift briefings and maintains key and radio control.
• Distributes meals, supplies, and stock; maintains accountability of razors.
• Prepares and maintains logs, reports, and records; answers inquiries and coordinates with other agencies.
• Escorts and transports inmates to court and other appointments; supervises inmate visitation.
• Performs general maintenance and cleaning of the Detention Center.
