Job summary

Guilford County Government seeks a Detention Officer to perform inmate intake, classification, and supervision in a county detention facility. You will handle security, property, and records while ensuring safe, orderly operations under established policies and procedures.

The role involves coordinating with court and law enforcement processes, transporting inmates as needed, and maintaining precise documentation and behavior standards in a demanding environment.

Qualifications

• High school graduation or equivalent and work experience in detention or related settings, or an associate or bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.
• Ability to understand and apply policies on inmate security, intake, care, and release.
• Must meet NC state standards for detention officer work.

Responsibilities

• Receives inmates; conducts searches, intake forms, fingerprinting, property handling and attire.
• Acts as booking officer; classifies inmates, assigns cells, maintains counts and locations.
• Supervises inmate floors, meals, transport for interviews/courts, and monitors medical status.
• Provides inmate information to public and legal personnel; maintains inmate files and court releases.
• Releases inmates on bond or time served; manages documentation of release.
• Supervises trustees, cleaning, laundry, and supply storage; prepares food and maintains facilities.
• Performs related work as required.
