Job summary

Pitt County is seeking a Detention Officer to perform custody and security duties at the county Detention Center. Under regular supervision, you admit and book inmates, assist with transport to court or medical facilities, supervise meals and medications, and oversee inmate activity.

You will prepare reports and logs and operate surveillance equipment. You must exercise good judgment, conduct searches, and maintain facility security.

Qualifications

• High school diploma required.
• Probationary or General Certification as a Detention Officer by the North Carolina Sheriff’s Training and Standards Commission.
• Valid North Carolina driver’s license required.

Responsibilities

• Exercises independent judgment in determining proper actions to jail-related events and emergencies.
• Maintains custody and safety of inmates; conducts searches and observes for signs of illness or distress.
• Prepares and maintains reports and logs related to inmate activity and incidents.
• Transports and escorts prisoners as needed, using restraints when authorized.
• Performs emergency duties during fires, medical emergencies, or civil disturbances.
