Job summary

Texas Department of Criminal Justice seeks a Sergeant of Correctional Officers to serve as Correctional Training Instructor at the Regional Training Academy. The role involves supervising and teaching trainees in security procedures, inmate custody, emergency response, and defensive tactics.

The candidate will prepare materials, deliver classroom instruction, evaluate performance, and coordinate training schedules while maintaining records.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• 2+ years of correctional custody or law enforcement experience.
• Willing and able to complete all required instructor certification courses within 6 months of hire.
• Experience in curriculum development and providing instruction.
• Training or teaching experience.
• Correctional custody or law enforcement supervisory experience.
• Certification as a defensive tactics, firearms, or chemical agents instructor (or group fitness/personal trainer/martial arts instructor).
• Working knowledge of adult education principles and instructional/curriculum design.

Responsibilities

• Instruct trainees in security procedures, searches, inmate custody and management, emergency response, defensive tactics, and use of firearms and chemical agents.
• Prepare training materials and provide classroom instruction.
• Counsel and supervise trainees and evaluate performance.
• Coordinate with academy leadership to maintain training schedules.
• Develop and revise lesson plans, instructional methods, and training aids.
• Compile and maintain training records and ensure compliance with agency policies and safety standards.
