Job summary

Gateway Foundation, a national nonprofit dedicated to recovery, seeks a Counselor to support behavioral healthcare in correctional settings. You will conduct client interviews, evaluate treatment response, and develop individualized plans with supervision.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degrees in a related field with at least 6 months of professional experience in substance use and/or mental health counseling.
  • PhD degree requires 1 year of experience if degree is not in a related field.
  • Associate degree requires at least 4 years of professional experience in substance use and/or mental health counseling.
  • HS diploma/GED requires 6 years of experience.
  • Florida certifications for addiction counseling (CAP, CCJAP, CAC) meet criteria.
  • Basic knowledge of human growth and psychosocial development.
  • Basic knowledge of group and individual dynamics, conflict resolution and intervention techniques.
  • Basic understanding of mental health disorders requiring referrals.
  • Basic communication skills to exchange information with various audiences.
  • Active listening and social perceptiveness.
  • Ability to read and interpret policies and instructions.
  • Ability to understand medication side effects and impacts.
  • Adaptability/flexibility to shift priorities.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts client interviews to review substance use disorder and treatment history.
  • Evaluates client response to treatment and recommends modifications to treatment plan and assists with caseloads and development of individualized treatment plans.
  • Provides basic didactic group counseling, including psychoeducation, drug education, and family education to ensure peer support.
  • Provides individual counseling, educational programs and lectures addressing relapse prevention and behavior changes.
  • Under supervision, carries caseload per State and contract requirements.
  • Collaborates with clients to develop discharge summaries and aftercare plans for supervisor approval.
  • Coordinates required services to resolve emergency problems in crisis situations.
  • Collects and maintains treatment records for compliance and reporting.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
