Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Corrections seeks a unit supervisor to oversee security personnel and inmate supervision under the Shift Lieutenant. You will help with evaluations, counseling, and ensure duties are performed through regular inspections.

You will train staff, lead unit briefings, and ensure unit safety and OSHA compliance. Responsibilities include investigations, counts, and formal reporting, with mandatory SCDC Basic Training on hire.

Qualifications

• High school diploma with at least 18 months experience in correctional, security, military, or police work, or a related degree may substitute for part of the experience.
• Must be certified by the SCDC Training Academy and complete the basic supervisory course within six months of entry into the position.
• Must successfully complete eight (8) weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.

Responsibilities

• Supervise the security personnel assigned to the unit under the Shift Lieutenant and control inmates assigned to the unit.
• Assist with preparation of employee evaluations, corrective actions, and counseling when needed.
• Conduct unannounced inspections to ensure staff perform duties properly.
• Lead briefings and training for all security personnel assigned to the unit.
• Perform routine inspections of the unit, security devices and gates for cleanliness, serviceability, and accountability, ensuring OSHA standards are met.
• Conduct investigations of alleged misconduct and mediate to resolve at the lowest level.
• Assist in counts and prepare written reports as required.
