Responsibilities

Located in Black Mountain, NC, Western Correctional Center for Women is a minimum custody facility on a 100+ acre compound that can house up to 366 inmates. Reporting to the Associate Warden of Programs, this position is responsible for providing and supervising programs for the rehabilitation of offenders in the prison system. This includes:

  • Developing, implementing, and maintaining program activities for offenders in smaller prison facilities, or managing major programs at larger facilities.
  • Working in primary program areas such as offender classification, correctional programs including work release, incentive wage, study release, home leave, adult basic education, volunteer programs, religion and recreation, and correctional counseling.
  • Contacting community agencies to enhance programs, establish new initiatives, and conduct home leave and work release investigations.
  • Monitoring the effectiveness of community volunteer workers involved in programs and supervising subordinate staff if applicable.
  • Coordinating program activities with custody staff.

Note: As of January 1, 2025, there are new salary adjustments approved by the State Human Resources Commission, effective from that date.

This is a full-time position (40 hours/week) with State Benefits.

Additional Information

Salary grade: NC08. State employees are encouraged to apply even if the salary grade is the same or lower than their current position. If selected, a new salary will be recalculated based on relevant education, experience, funding, and internal equity, which may result in a pay increase.

The NC Dept. Of Adult Correction (DAC) oversees the care, custody, and supervision of adults sentenced for violating laws in North Carolina, including State Prisons and Community Supervision divisions.

Western Correctional Center for Women, formerly Swannanoa Correctional Center for Women, opened in 2008 and is a minimum custody facility for approximately 360 female offenders in Black Mountain, NC. The facility has undergone renovations to improve educational and medical facilities. The name was changed to Western Correctional Center for Women in 2021.

Qualifications

Applicants must possess:

  • Documented knowledge of supportive counseling and/or interviewing techniques for intake assessments.
  • Knowledge of community services and public/private programs available to offenders.

Minimum education and experience requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in human services or criminal justice from an accredited institution and one year of related experience; OR
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special qualification: Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
