Job summary

Qualifications

• Graduation from high school or equivalent education with two years of work experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• General knowledge of basic mathematics.
• Ability to read, understand, and follow instructions; communicate verbally and in writing.

Responsibilities

• Conduct regular and unscheduled head counts of offenders during active hours in housing units, dormitories, work details, or training activities and telephone control center.
• Control, direct, and monitor activity and movement of offenders within a specified area to ensure security and safety.
• Coordinate, direct and instruct offender work crews and evaluate offender work for proper completion.
• Monitor and control offenders during transport to work assignments, classes, medical appointments, and court hearings.
• Intervene to maintain security and safety using restraints, firearms, or other devices as required following procedures.
• Inspect persons and articles before admission to the facility with metal detector, x-ray, or hand scanner.
• Perform searches of offenders and visitors to prevent contraband.
• Maintain use and accountability of keys, caustic and flammable materials, tools and equipment.
• Inspect locks, doors, and security systems for damage or breach potential.
• Operate state vehicles to transport offenders and patrol fences.
• Write reports detailing incidents and offender behavior.
• Process mail and packages per procedures.
• Brief supervisors and relief staff on occurrences.
