Job summary

State of South Carolina's Kershaw Correctional Institution seeks a Corrections Officer to provide security, custody and control of inmates in a cafeteria setting. Responsibilities include maintaining order, reporting counts, and coordinating with staff to ensure safety and compliance.

Minimum requirements: U.S. citizen, 18+, high school diploma or GED, valid driver's license. Must pass medical assessment and complete the Certification within six months of placement.

Qualifications

• U.S. citizen required for eligibility.
• 18 years of age or older.
• High school diploma or GED required.
• Valid driver's license required.
• Tattoos must not be offensive or gang-related; neck tattoos evaluated case-by-case.
• Must pass a medical assessment.
• Must complete Correctional Officer Basic Certification within six months.

Responsibilities

• Maintain control in inmate dorms, cafeteria, work sites and surrounding areas.
• Instruct and direct inmates assigned to various work details.
• Maintain and report inmate count and daily logs; prepare and submit reports.
• Maintain surveillance and search for contraband.
• Escort visitors and civilian employees through the facility.
• Ensure inmates receive prescribed medical/behavioral treatments.
• Control gate tower or other posts; inspect buildings and equipment.
• Investigate inmate/resident complaints and take action.
• Provide crisis intervention and report incidents as needed.
