Job summary

Grand Traverse County is seeking a dedicated Correctional Officer to supervise inmates and handle intake releases at the jail. The role requires processing inmates, maintaining order, and conducting security procedures with strict adherence to policies.

A valid MI driver’s license, background check, and MSCTC-aligned tests are required. On-site position with potential for irregular hours and on-call duties.

Qualifications

• Associate’s Degree preferred; additional related experience may substitute for college requirements.
• Must possess valid Michigan Driver's License and maintain eligibility to drive per County policy.
• Certified as a Correctional Officer in Michigan; certification after hire.
• Passing EMPCO written test for local corrections officer candidates as recognized by MSCTC.
• Passing the physical abilities test for local corrections officer candidates per MSCTS guidance.

Responsibilities

• Process inmates in and out of the facility, including fingerprints, mug shots, medical info, and cell placement.
• Administer housing procedures: head counts, meal counts, orientations, clothing, testing, mail, and commissary distribution.
• Operate security and monitoring systems; log activities and review reports.
• Patrol facilities, supervise inmates, ensure compliance with jail rules, and maintain order.
• Transport inmates to court and other locations; provide courtroom security.
• Manage inmate money and bonds; maintain supplies for jail operations.
• Respond to emergencies and communicate with supervisors; follow department policies.
