Job Opportunity: Correctional Officer I at Buena Vista Correctional Complex (Colorado Department of Corrections)

This posting is for vacant positions at our Buena Vista location, offering numerous opportunities within the CDOC.

About Buena Vista Correctional Complex: It comprises two facilities: Buena Vista Correctional Facility (BVCF), opened in 1892 with a capacity of 934 inmates at medium custody, and Buena Vista Minimum Center (BVMC), opened in 1999 with a capacity of 300 inmates at minimum custody.

Position Overview: Correctional Officer I

This role involves maintaining safety and security in our facilities, supporting inmate preparation for community reentry, and engaging respectfully with inmates, families, and staff. Responsibilities include monitoring inmates, operating security equipment, conducting searches, responding to emergencies, and ensuring safety protocols are followed.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or GED
Required Competencies:
  • Strong work ethic, integrity, sound judgment, interpersonal skills, excellent communication, and ability to work in stressful situations.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bilingual abilities, mentoring or volunteer experience.
Conditions of Employment:
  • Legal eligibility to work in the U.S., valid driver’s license, no felony convictions, successful background check, health screening, and completion of required training modules.
Additional Requirements:
  • Ability to work various shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays; willingness to work outdoors and in confined environments; physical ability to perform duties including searches and defensive tactics.
