About the Facility

The Buena Vista Correctional Complex includes two facilities: Buena Vista Correctional Facility (BVCF), opened in 1892, with a capacity of 934 medium custody inmates, and Buena Vista Minimum Center (BVMC), opened in 1999, with a capacity of 300 minimum custody inmates.

Work Location

This position is based at the Buena Vista Correctional Complex in Chaffee County, CO.

Position Details

The Correctional Officer I role involves maintaining safety and security within CDOC facilities, supporting our mission, and preparing inmates for reentry into the community. Responsibilities include inmate supervision, facility monitoring, conducting searches, managing inmate movement, and responding to emergencies.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED
Conditions of Employment
  • Must be 18 years or older, possess a valid driver’s license, and have no felony or domestic violence convictions
Required Competencies
  • Strong work ethic, integrity, sound judgment, teamwork, communication skills, and ability to handle stressful situations
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bilingual abilities, mentoring, or volunteer experience
Additional Requirements
  • Successful completion of background check, health screening, and basic training modules including Defensive Tactics
  • Willingness to work various shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Ability to work in a correctional environment, operate security equipment, and respond to emergencies
