Job description

This Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC) posting will be used to fill vacant positions at our Buena Vista location. There are endless opportunities with the CDOC.

The Buena Vista Correctional Complex comprises two facilities: Buena Vista Correctional Facility (BVCF) and Buena Vista Minimum Center (BVMC). BVCF opened in 1892 as Colorado State Reformatory, and BVMC opened in 1999. BVCF has a capacity of 934 medium custody inmates, while BVMC has a capacity of 300 minimum custody inmates.

We are pleased to share that CDOC has collaborated with Fading West Development LLC (FWD) to assist employees with housing in the Buena Vista area. FWD is located in the Farm neighborhood near shopping, restaurants, a fitness center, and work. Note: CDOC cannot guarantee housing or operate the housing.

The Correctional Officer I (CO I) role involves maintaining safety and security at CDOC facilities, supporting inmate reentry, and communicating professionally with inmates, families, staff, and the public. Responsibilities include monitoring inmates, controlling access, operating security equipment, transporting inmates, conducting searches, responding to emergencies, and documenting incidents.

Positions may require working additional hours or shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, to ensure facility safety.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or GED
Required Competencies include:
  • Work ethic, integrity, sound judgment, stress management, interpersonal skills, customer service, attention to detail, communication skills, knowledge of criminal justice, computer skills, and ability to work with diverse populations.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bilingual skills, mentoring, volunteer work
Conditions of Employment:
  • Legal eligibility to work in the U.S., valid driver’s license, no felony convictions, successful background check, health screening, and completion of basic training modules including defensive tactics and firearms training.
