Minimum Qualification Requirements

1. Education: There is no substitution of education for specialized experience for this position at this grade level.
2. Experience: You must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade level in federal service. This experience must have equipped you with the qualifications necessary to perform the duties of the position.
   • Experience related to the functions of the Mailroom and Receiving and Discharge areas, including admission, release, physical processing, identification, prisoner transfers, security procedures, bus movement, and final releases.
   • Experience supervising large groups of inmates in preparation for transportation, including coordinating functions like visual searching, fingerprinting, and photographing.
   • Experience in the proper release of inmates who have completed their sentences, including identification, review of clearances, fines, and release paperwork.
   • Experience coordinating exchanges of custody with federal and non-federal agencies.

Medical Requirements

The Department of Justice, Bureau of Prisons, has established medical requirements for Correctional Officer positions. These roles involve mental and physical pressures, including prolonged walking, standing, restraining prisoners, and participating in escape hunts. Applicants must be physically capable of performing these duties efficiently and be free from health issues that pose employment hazards. Sound health and physical fitness are mandatory.
