Position Overview:

Responsible for the safekeeping and welfare of prisoners at the Woodbury County Jail. Duties include maintaining jail cleanliness and security, handling complaints, transporting prisoners, completing related paperwork, and assisting with radio communication and dispatch responsibilities under the supervision of the County Sheriff, Major, Lieutenant, or Jail Commander.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

The following duties are typical but not exhaustive. Other duties may be assigned:

• Ensure the care and security of all prisoners, including booking, releasing, safekeeping of belongings, and maintaining order.
• Maintain accurate records within assigned scope.
• Assist in jail maintenance and coordinate trustee work assignments while ensuring security.
• Transport prisoners or other persons in custody of the Sheriff's Department.
• Complete all related paperwork.
• Manage jail security and address complaints.
• Perform additional duties as assigned by the Sheriff, Major, or Lieutenant.
• Attendance is required.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Must be a U.S. citizen.
• At least 21 years old.
• High school diploma or GED.
• Preferably, 60+ hours of post-secondary education, four years of military service, or five years of law enforcement experience.
• Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
• Must pass background check, physical, vision, psychological tests, and drug screening.
• Valid driver's license required.
• Knowledge of law enforcement procedures, civil and criminal law, rules of evidence, first aid, and emergency principles.
• Effective communication skills and good human relations.
• Emotional stability and personal maturity.
• Physical ability to lift 50-85 pounds.
• Bilingual skills are a plus.
