Job summary

The Florida Department of Corrections seeks a Correctional Officer Captain for Baker Correctional Institution. This internal promotional opportunity is open to current FDC employees and carries regulatory responsibilities, including emergency command and shift coordination.

The incumbent supervises officers and sergeants, plans, organizes, and coordinates shift activities, and ensures security coverage and compliance with procedures. Salary will be determined per current pay procedures.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Be a citizen of the United States.
• Must have a High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Must have completed the basic recruit training course for correctional officers and have one year of experience as a certified officer with the State of Florida.
• Must not have received a suspension within the past 12 months.
• Must not have received an involuntary demotion within the past 24 months.
• Must not have received less than a 3.00 rating on a performance evaluation within the past 3 fiscal years.

Responsibilities

• Supervises Correctional Officers and Correctional Officer Sergeants assigned to a security post on any shift.
• Acts as initial Commander during emergency situations and coordinates activities of all officers on a shift.
• Delegates post assignments, coordinates leave use and ensures attendance records are accurate.
• Ensures proper security coverage with lead officers and conducts counseling as needed.
• Supervises searches for contraband and conducts daily inspections of buildings and grounds.
• Maintains facility security and acts as facility manager during non-administrative hours.
• Conducts performance evaluations and coordinates training for subordinates.
• Takes disciplinary actions and advises management on appeals.
