Job summary

The State of Florida is seeking a CORRECTIONAL OFFICER CAPTAIN at Dade Correctional Institution as an internal promotion. The incumbent supervises Correctional Officers and Sergeants on assigned posts, coordinates emergency responses, and plans shift activities to ensure security and order.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Be a citizen of the United States.
• Must have a High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Must have completed the basic recruit training course for correctional officers and have one year of experience as a certified officer with the State of Florida.
• Must not have received a suspension within the past 12 months.
• Must not have received an involuntary demotion within the past 24 months.
• Must not have received less than a 3.00 rating on a performance evaluation within the past 3 fiscal years.

Responsibilities

• Supervise Correctional Officers and Correctional Officer Sergeants on assigned posts and shifts.
• Serve as initial Commander during emergency situations and coordinate shift activities.
• Delegate post assignments, coordinate leave, and ensure attendance and leave reports are accurate.
• Work with lead officers to ensure proper security coverage and conduct counseling when needed.
• Supervise searches, inspect facilities for security and sanitation, and act as facility manager during non‑administrative hours.
• Conduct performance evaluations, plan training, and handle disciplinary actions as appropriate.
• Oversee inmate housing, transportation with restraints, and head counts, maintaining custody outside secured areas as required.
