The Iowa Department of Corrections offers a competitive salary and benefits in comparison to other public employment and other state corrections departments. Starting pay is $24.00/hour + shift differential for 2nd and 3rd shifts, and annual merit increases. Correctional Officer Job Duties:
  • Observe incarcerated individual behavior/interaction with staff, other incarcerated individuals, and visitors; communicate and document observations to ensure effective security and consistent application of incarcerated individual change principles.
  • Interact with incarcerated individuals, utilizing behavioral techniques to assist in problem-solving, behavior change, and skill development.
  • Patrol facilities, conduct security checks, rounds, and counts; inspect all areas for safety/security deficiencies.
  • Search incarcerated individuals, vehicles, packages, equipment, and cells for contraband.
  • Instruct incarcerated individuals in rules, policies, and expectations to foster successful adaptation and pro-social behavior.
  • Escort incarcerated individuals, visitors, and staff; verify possession of passes or legal documents.
  • Interact with the public, visitors, and victims; provide information, security, and assistance.
  • Role model respectful, pro-social behaviors and support the development of skills and attitudes for positive change.
  • Maintain logs, prepare reports, and enter data into the electronic record system.
  • Supervise and evaluate incarcerated individual work assignments.
  • Operate security and communication systems, including electronic doors, radios, alarms, CCTV, and control devices.
  • Attend training and professional development classes.

Qualifications include a high school diploma, GED, or equivalency.
