Job summary

Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction is seeking a Nurse Practitioner for the Pickaway Correctional Institution in Orient, OH. This full-time role works under the institutional CMO to manage chronic illnesses, provide medical care to inmates, and participate in quality improvement initiatives.

Responsibilities include exams, referrals, medication management, and rounds with the medical team. A valid RN license and NP certification are required, with authority to prescribe under ORC

Qualifications

• Valid license as Registered Nurse; completion of Nurse Practitioner program & certified by Ohio Board of Nursing for advanced practice with valid certificate of authority & certificate to prescribe in accordance with ORC 4723.

Responsibilities

• Monitors progress of and intervenes in chronic illnesses according to DRC policies.
• Vaccinates, prescribes medications, or administers treatment and may perform minor surgery as allowed.
• Conducts routine physical exams to assess chronic conditions and diagnose new ones.
• Evaluates need for specialty referrals and reviews reports for recommendations.
• Orders and reviews lab, x-ray, and other diagnostic tests.
• Completes medical reclassification requests and non-formulary medication requests with CMO.
• Provides routine and emergency medical care to inmate patients.
• Examines, diagnoses and treats within Ohio Nursing Board scope.
• Attends institutional medical meetings and participates in CQI.

Job Description

There are two (2) vacant positions; only one (1) application is needed.

What You’ll Do:

This position works under general direction of the institutional Chief Medical Officer (CMO) and may be required to work at more than one institution.

• Monitors progress of and intervene in the course of chronic illnesses, using the DRC policies and protocols for guidance
• Inoculates or vaccinates against communicable diseases & prescribe medications or administer treatment of acute and chronically ill patients & performs minor surgery as training & competency allows
• Performs routine physical exams of patients to determine control or status of chronic conditions & diagnose new conditions
• Evaluates patients for the necessity of specialty referral consultations inside or outside the institution & reviews said consult reports for the recommendations, approving or disapproving accordingly
• Orders & reviews the results of laboratory, x-ray, & other diagnostic testing as appropriate
• Facilitates, with the CMO, the completion of medical reclassification & requests for non-formulary medications as necessary
• Performs routine & emergency medical care of inmate patients as scheduled
• Examines, diagnoses & treats patients within scope of practice, as identified by the State of Ohio Nursing Board as applicable
• Conducts rounds on infirmary patients as deemed appropriate by the CMO
• Writes up medical information gathered during patient interviews according to DRC Bureau of Medical Services guidelines, policies, protocols & related ACA standards currently in practice, documenting all assessments & diagnostic impressions, as well as any other treatment plans & follow-up parameters
• Cooperates with CMO medical quality oversight & accept suggestions, redirection, and guidance
• Attends professional institutional-specific meetings as requested by the Warden, Deputy Warden, or CMO
• Attends the monthly institution medical Continuous Quality Improvement meetings as an active participant
• Attends statewide Medical Leadership Quarterly meetings as directed by the CMO
• Takes outpatient call as directed by the CMO, after approval by the BOMS State Medical Director

Pre-Employment Drug Testing:
