Description of Work

This position is located at Avery Mitchell Correctional Institution in Avery County, NC a medium custody male facility. Reporting to a Correctional Captain II, this position is involved in the planning, supervising and coordination of activities and primarily is custodial in nature including serving as shift supervisor.

Key Duties Included

• Serving as first-line supervisor of Correctional Sergeant II’s.
• Serving as Officer-in-Charge in absence of the Correctional Captain.
• Assisting with personal actions, administrative affairs, and officers’ work schedule.
• Coordinating activities involving discipline, security, and the welfare of the offender population.
• Conducting inspections of housing units and other buildings, grounds, and posts to ascertain that officers are alert, that discipline is being maintained, and that assignments are carried out properly.

Salary Grade Range

$41,206.00 - $72,113.00 Salary Grade: NC09

Minimum Education and Experience

High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years six months of experience as a Correctional Sergeant, or two years of experience as a Correctional Sergeant II; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualifications

Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training and Standards Commission.

Additional Requirements
