Job summary

Merced County is seeking a Custodial Deputy Sheriff I/II to help maintain security of incarcerated individuals, process bookings, and enforce facility rules. This 24/7 role includes holidays, weekends, and potential overtime, with Extra-Help pay for non-benefit positions.

Applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent, complete CORE and CA Penal Code 832 certificates within 12 months, and be eligible for POST certification.

Qualifications

• High school graduation or equivalent.
• Successful completion of the Adult Corrections Officer Core Course and possession of CA Penal Code 832 certificate; must obtain within 12 months of appointment.
• Must be eligible for POST certification and maintain eligibility; background checks, psychological and physical examination required prior to appointment.

Responsibilities

• Operate a computer and office equipment.
• Communicate effectively with others in person and over the phone.
• Carry out duties in a legal and professional manner.
• Attend required training and write comprehensive reports.
• Analyze situations and develop appropriate responses.
• Physically restrain incarcerated persons as needed.
• Escort and guard detainees to various locations.
• Maintain order and ensure safety within the facility.
