Description of Work

Located in Black Mountain, NC, Western Correctional Center for Women is a minimum custody facility on a 100+ acre compound that can house up to 366 inmates.

  • Carrying a caseload of offenders, which involves supportive counseling, conducting assessments, developing case plans, answering and following up on offender questions and problems, and making recommendations to the classification committee.
  • Assisting in major dynamic programs or coordinating major or specialized programs for the rehabilitation of offenders, such as offender work assignments, work release, education, or recreation, as well as transition planning and coordination.
  • Coordinating transition (re-entry) prior to parole or release into the community.

Position Details

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits.

Work hours: 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Monday - Friday with one late day each week.

The salary grade for this position is NC07. State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as, or lower than, their current position. If selected, a new salary will be recalculated based on relevant education, experience, funding, and internal equity, which may result in a pay increase.

The NC Department of Adult Correction (DAC) is the largest state agency with over 26,000 employees, responsible for safeguarding citizens through prevention, protection, and preparation, as well as the care, custody, and supervision of sentenced adults.

About Western Correctional Center for Women

Opened in 2008, located in Black Mountain, NC, housing approximately 360 female offenders. The facility has undergone renovations to improve educational and medical facilities. Its name was changed to Western Correctional Center for Women in 2021.

Qualifications and Requirements
  • Documented knowledge of case management practices, supportive counseling, or interviewing techniques for intake assessments.
  • Minimum Education: Associate degree in Criminal Justice, Human Services, Recreation, or a related field; or a high school diploma/GED plus two years of custody experience; or equivalent training and experience.
  • Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
