Job summary

The State of North Carolina Department of Adult Correction seeks a Correctional Captain II (S) to oversee planning, supervision, and coordination at a medium custody male facility. Reporting to the Associate Warden of Custody, you will supervise Lieutenant IIs and coordinate administrative tasks within the facility.

Responsibilities include duties as Officer-In-Charge as needed, scheduling, disciplinary actions, inspections, and ensuring safety and discipline.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or GED and 2 years 6 months of experience as a Correctional Lieutenant, OR 2 years as a Correctional Lieutenant II; equivalent combination accepted.
• Must be eligible for certification by the NC Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission.
• Knowledge of Prison Policies and Procedures and/or Facility Operations preferred.

Responsibilities

• Supervise Correctional Lieutenant IIs and coordinate custody staff.
• Assist with custody staff assignments, administrative affairs, and offender welfare.
• Occasionally serve as Officer-In-Charge (OIC) and coordinate leave, interviews, and monthly reports.
• Review security issues, incidents, and discipline, and assist in employee discipline.

Description of Work

Reporting to the Associate Warden of Custody, this position is involved in the planning, supervision, and coordination of activities at a medium custody male correctional facility. Other responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

1. Supervising Correctional Lieutenant II’s.
2. Assisting with assigning and supervising custody staff, and coordinating administrative affairs within the facility.
3. Following NCDAC policies and procedures as well as performing on-the-job training.
4. Serving as the Officer-In-Charge (OIC) as needed.
5. Assisting with personnel actions, administrative affairs, officers’ work schedule and coordinating activities involving discipline, security, and the welfare of the offender population.
6. Serving as shift supervisor as position is primarily custodial in nature.
7. Coordinating actions, such as employee leave requests, interviewing applicants for employment, monthly reports, offender concerns or issues, and other activities relative to a correctional facility.
8. Conducting inspections of housing units and other buildings, grounds, and posts to ascertain that officers are alert that discipline is being maintained, and that assignments are carried out properly.
9. Reviewing investigating regarding security issues, incidents, disputes, and complaints.
10. Assisting in assessing, evaluating, and implementing employee discipline.
11. Preparing a variety of records and reports and performing other duties as required.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they meet the Minimum Education and Experience listed on the vacancy announcement. The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)/Management Preferences are not required but applicants who possess the following skills are preferred:

• Documented experience with report writing.

Salary Range : $45,431 - $79,504

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week). The selected candidate may be selected to work any shift and will work weekends and holidays to ensure 24/7 staff coverage.

About Warren Correctional Institution

Warren Correctional Institution is a mixed custody facility that houses minimum, medium, and close custody offenders. The current capacity of Warren CI is 809 male offenders, with most offenders being housed in medium custody. Offenders at Warren Correctional Institution may work at the Correction Enterprises Janitorial Products Plant, gaining marketable job skillsand self-confidence participating in the manufacturing of soap and cleaning products.

Offenders at Warren Correctional Institution may also participate in vocational training and educational courses to earn their HiSet/GED. They may also participate in the At Both Ends of the Leash (ABEL) program, which provides an opportunity for offenders to train service animals for individuals with medical diagnoses or physical disabilities.
