ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF JOB:
  1. Supervises, conducts, and coordinates resident activities and functions including visitations, meals, life skills program, recreation and shower activities, admission and discharge, etc
  2. Ensures the safety and security of residents, conducts room, property, and other checks
  3. Implements disciplinary actions through verbal orders, behavior modification program, problem solving, conflict resolution, isolation, crisis intervention, etc including physical restraint of acting out youth
  4. Enforces detention rules
  5. Assists in the documentation of positive and negative behaviors; maintains behavior log, records visitors. Hearings, and medical information
  6. Notifies parents regarding resident admission
  7. Prepares verbal and written reports as required
  8. Admits juvenile offenders, takes urine samples, conducts visual searches, takes property inventory, assess bodily injuries, etc
  9. Transports juveniles to hospital, attorney, etc
  10. Orders supplies
  11. Performs duties of the Shift Supervisor during absences
  12. Administers assessment tools including Problem Severity Index, MAPI, drug and alcohol screening, and behavioral and health assessment; communicates results and significant findings to appropriate personnel
OTHER DUTIES OF JOB:
  1. Attends trainings and meetings as necessary
  2. Performs other job duties as required.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Receives instruction and occasional supervision from the Director of Juvenile Detention and Shelter.

SUPERVISION GIVEN:

None.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
  1. Works indoors in adequate work space, lighting, temperatures and ventilation.
  2. Works indoors with average exposure to noise and stress, but subject to frequent disruptions.
  3. Normal indoor exposure to dust/dirt.
  4. Works daily with volatile and potentially hostile or aggressive individuals.
  5. Works effectively within a juvenile detention center
PHYSICAL/MENTAL CONDITIONS:
  1. Must be able to sit for long periods throughout the workday, with intermittent periods of standing, walking, bending, twisting and reaching as necessary to carry out job duties.
  2. Dexterity requirements range from simple to coordinated movements of fingers/hands; feet/legs; and torso as necessary to carry out job duties.
  3. Light to medium work with occasional lifting/carrying of objects with a maximum weight of 20 pounds.
  4. Must be able to cope with the physical, mental and emotional stress of the job.
  5. Must be able to pay close attention to details and concentrate on work.
QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. EDUCATION/TRAINING:
    Associates Degree in Administration of Justice, Corrections, or related field
  2. WORK EXPERIENCE:
    5-11 months child care experience or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities
    A valid Pennsylvania Driver’s License
    Must meet DPW and State regulations
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
  1. Must be able to speak and understand the English language in an understandable manner in order to carry out essential functions of job.
  2. Must possess effective oral and written communication skills and excellent grammar, punctuation and spelling.
  3. Must possess ability to function independently, have flexibility and personal integrity and the ability to work effectively with general public, co-workers and others.
  4. Must possess ability to maintain confidentiality in regard to client information and records.
  5. Must possess technical knowledge of operating personal computers, Microsoft Office, Windows platform programs, and other office equipment.
  6. Must possess excellent organizational skills and ability to coordinate several schedules and details.
  7. Must possess ability to perform basic mathematical calculations and prepare invoices, billings and reports.
  8. Must possess ability to compose routine correspondence.
  9. Must possess ability to interact effectively with several departments and outside agencies, using tact and discretion.
  10. Must possess some knowledge of child welfare regulations, terminology and procedures.
