Job summary

The University of Virginia Physicians Group is seeking a student lab assistant to support scheduled studies. You will set up and break down lab space, calibrate equipment (e.g., metabolic carts, ergometers), and assist with exercise tests and Bod Pod assessments.

You will also help with training sessions and maintain participant forms. Responsibilities include sterilizing equipment, completing forms, restocking supplies, and communicating scheduling needs to a supervisor.

Qualifications

  • Must be a current UVA undergraduate student.
  • Federal Work Study eligibility required or preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Clean and sanitize lab space and equipment after each study session.
  • Assist research staff with exercise test measures, resting metabolism tests, and Bod Pod assessments.
  • Assist with supervised exercise training sessions for study participants.
  • Sterilize metabolic masks and related equipment using the autoclave.
  • Complete testing forms accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Update and maintain subject-facing forms and handouts as requested by lab staff.
  • Monitor and restock lab supplies as needed.
  • Order linens and other consumable supplies for testing sessions.
  • Communicate proactively and promptly with the supervisor regarding scheduling and availability.

  • Clean and sanitize lab space and equipment after each study session

  • Assist research staff with exercise test measures, resting metabolism tests, and Bod Pod (air displacement plethysmography) assessments

  • Assist with supervised exercise training sessions for study participants

  • Sterilize metabolic masks and related equipment using the autoclave

  • Complete testing forms accurately and in a timely manner

  • Update and maintain subject-facing forms and handouts as requested by lab staff

  • Monitor and restock lab supplies as needed

  • Order linens and other consumable supplies for testing sessions

  • Communicate proactively and promptly with the supervisor regarding scheduling and availability


Required Qualifications


  • Current UVA undergraduate student

  • Federal Work Study eligible


Preferred Qualifications


  • Reliable, detail-oriented, and able to follow standardized procedures

  • Current certification in BLS

  • Strong communication skills and ability to work both independently and as part of a team

  • Availability to work flexible hours, including some early morning or late afternoon sessions, based on study scheduling needs


This positions is expected to start September 14, 2026 and end May 4, 2027.


Pay range: $17-$20/hour
