Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Responsible to the Vice President, Administrative Affairs, for the safe and legal acquisition, use, storage and disposal of chemicals and hazardous materials by all departments for the College.

• Knowledgeable of and utilizes a library of technical and legal references in order to determine safety hazards and legal requirements for chemical compounds.
• Interpret, apply & advise on the compliance of the array of federal, state & local laws which regulate chemical use, as well as chemical and/ or biological waste.
• Develop & review the implementation of specific college policies and procedures for all programs which utilize chemicals or hazardous materials.
• Advise necessary staff regarding chemical regulations & operations safety & provide supervisory training upon request.
• Inspect laboratories & chemical storage areas & audit departmental operations & recommend methods of insuring safety operation.
• Advise employees & students regarding compliance with regulations as they affect course offerings, maintenance, operations, chemical purchases & on-site treatment of hazardous materials.
• Develop emergency procedures and direct operations for any clean up & disposal of spills and/or leaks of hazardous materials within college facilities.
• Conduct life safety familiarization tours of campus for the municipal fire dept. in conjunction with Public Safety.
• Work with other depts. in maintaining the right to know hazard communication program, including MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheets) records; RTK (Right To Know) notices; employee training programs; attendance records; and counseling to employees or supervisor regarding safe chemical use.
• Assist Campus Serv. in selection of treatment or disposal methods that will minimize liability, exposure and economic impact.
• Advise staff and emergency personnel regarding hazardous materials & provide information concerning chemical use composition, hazards & disposal.
• Respond to complaints about air quality, identify source of problems including air sampling and testing.
• Advise the College of concerns and corrective action to be taken.
• Review worker's compensation claims due to chemical exposure.
• Coordinate & develop forms, procedures & training to institute an on-going hazardous materials program.
• Refer safety complaints to proper area.
• Recommend environment testing as necessary.
• Respond to order complaints and advise the V.P. Administrative Affairs of recommended corrective action.
• Conduct inspections which may require climbing ladders to check above ceilings or other remote areas.
• Other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Education
  • Bachelor's in chemistry or a related field required.
  • Certification for Hazardous Materials Emergency First Response or Certified Hazardous Materials Manager required.
• Experience
  • One year in environmental health and safety issues required.
  • Laboratory or hazardous chemical safety experience preferred.

Working Conditions

• Environmental testing equipment.
• Classroom setting to conduct employee training on proper handling of hazardous materials and chemicals.
• Responds to air quality concerns which may involve investigating the source of objectionable odors whenever they occur and conducts air sampling to determine corrective action.
• On call 24 hours per day to respond to hazardous waste or hazardous chemical spills or possible exposure to chemicals and to use proper protection and equipment to clean up as required for a Certified Industrial Emergency Responder.
• This position requires a background check and drug screen.

Hiring Range

11 Hourly/Starting salary beginning at $31.97/hourly based on education and experience.
