Harris County Public Health (HCPH) includes a network of more than 1,100 public health professionals working together to improve health outcomes for the third most populous county in the United States. HCPH provides a multitude of services such as medical and dental services, community programming, and health education for the approximately 2.3 million people in unincorporated Harris County. Position Overview:

The Coordinator, Built Environment serves as a primary Built Environment representative and contact person for various environmental public health initiatives. This position is responsible for initiating and maintaining relationships with community organizations, planning and managing stakeholder engagement activities, and serving as an environmental health representative in community planning initiatives that address safe food and water access in Harris County.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Develop educational resources on food and water security and access: Create informative materials that emphasize the significance of food and water security addressing various community demographics and needs.
  • Organize community workshops and events: Plan and execute engaging workshops, events, or forums that empower community members to make informed choices about food and water.
  • Advocate for food and water justice and equity: Advocate for policies that address systemic barriers to food and water access such as fresh and waste water infrastructure, engaging with policymakers and community leaders to champion equitable water distribution. Evaluate the current state of water access, conducting surveys or assessments to identify gaps and target areas needing immediate attention.
  • Monitor and evaluate program impact: Implement metrics to measure the impact of food and water access initiatives, regularly assessing progress and effectiveness, and adapting strategies as needed.
  • Produce high-quality communication plans and technical reports, including data analysis, project outcomes, methodologies, and recommendations.

Requirements

Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Public Health or related field from an accredited college or university.


Experience:

  • At least three (3) years of public service experience.


Certifications/Licensure:

  • Must have a valid Driver’s License (TX upon hire).


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSA):

  • Ability to use Microsoft Office programs including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint at an Intermediate level.
  • Understands the organizational mission, ethics and public good; is concerned with public trust.
  • Ability to track and manage grants, budgets, and reporting requirements.
  • Ability to write comprehensive reports for different audiences.
  • Demonstrates respect for the opinions and beliefs of others.

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with community groups, residents, county/city staff and professionals from the fields of transportation, planning, engineering, and public health.

Position Type, and Typical Hours of Work:

  • Regular, Full-Time.
  • Monday – Friday | 8 am – 5 pm.
  • Must have the ability to work flexible hours including some weekends.


Work Environment:

  • This position operates in a professional office environment as well as various communities, some of which may be considered high-risk.


Physical Demands:

  • Must be able to bend and stand for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to lift, carry, push, pull up to 20 pounds.
  • Must be able to drive for extended time periods.
