Job summary

The Payroll Specialist at Smurfit Westrock in Duluth, GA will process hourly and salaried payrolls for US employees across multiple states and pay frequencies. The role requires in-office presence a minimum of 3 days per week and involves ensuring tax compliance, time data accuracy, and HRIS entries (PeopleSoft).

You'll handle direct deposits, deductions, and SOX controls while maintaining payroll records and responding to employee inquiries.

Qualifications

• CPP or FPC designation is highly preferred.
• Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in business, Human Resources, or a related field.
• Union payroll experience would be helpful
• 3-5 years of full-cycle payroll administration in a fast-paced environment
• Experience with multi-state payroll taxes, including CA, OH, PA
• Knowledge of payroll practices and HRIS systems, including PeopleSoft
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills across employee levels across units

Job description

The Opportunity:

The Payroll Specialist will process hourly and salaried payrolls for US employee populations. Pay frequencies include weekly, bi-weekly, semimonthly, monthly, and special incentive payrolls assigned to multiple companies and in multiple states/provinces.

This role will be located at 3950 Shackleford Rd, Duluth, GA, and is required to be in the office a minimum of 3 days a week.

How you will impact Smurfit Westrock:

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Process accurate and timely payrolls for all employees.
• Process all payroll transactions and prepare file loads for hourly and salaried payrolls.
• Key in direct deposit, tax, and deductions into the system for processing.
• Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local tax laws.
• Resolve customer service issues and problems using their individual expertise in payroll policies and laws.
• Respond to questions from employees and resolve discrepancies.
• Serve as the subject matter expert for US payroll-related issues.
• Maintain payroll records and databases.
• Follow all defined payroll SOX controls as defined in the payroll narrative.
• Provide analysis or work on projects assigned by their manager.
• Maintain time and attendance systems to ensure accurate data for payroll processing and reporting.
• Complete daily and weekly time analysis on each location. Launches export of information out of WFS for each current pay period. Analyze/research each variance to ensure that all hours are accurate. Works with location to update/change time accordingly.
• Update and maintain employee information.
• Pull payroll time files and loads/submits into PeopleSoft.
• Adheres to departmental and organizational schedule deadlines for payroll.
• Ensures compliance with policies and procedures, contracts, and state and federal laws.

What you need to succeed:

• CPP or FPC designation is highly preferred.
• Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in business, Human Resources, or a related field
• Union payroll experience would be helpful
• 3-5 years of full-cycle payroll administration work experience in a fast-paced, high-volume environment
• Experience with multi-state payroll taxes, including California, Ohio, and Pennsylvania
• Knowledge of payroll practices and HRIS systems, including PeopleSoft
• Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to interact with all employee levels across multiple business units and functional areas.
