Job summary

Smurfit Westrock is seeking a Shift Supervisor to oversee the baling of incoming recycling materials and ensure outbound materials meet broker or mill specs. You will assign and oversee production, safety and housekeeping duties and actively participate in Health and Safety Programs.

Responsibilities include supervising operations, coaching staff, managing shifts and changeovers, coordinating start-ups, maintaining quality, SOP/JHA adherence, and maintaining the maintenance program.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• 2–5 years of manufacturing experience.
• Manual dexterity for operating machinery and computers.
• Non climate-controlled environment.
• Communication with diverse staff.
• Lifts up to 45 pounds; PPE safety gear required.

Responsibilities

• Oversee baling of incoming recycling materials and ensure outbound material meets broker/mill specs.
• Supervise production operations per plant policies and procedures.
• Train and coach operators.
• Conduct employee performance counseling.
• Manage shift schedule including assignments, rotations, vacations and breaks.
• Coordinate production startups, shutdowns and changeovers.
• Schedule and conduct shift meetings.
• Ensure shift production goals are met.
• Quality control: adjust during shift to meet specs.
• Follow SOPs and Job Hazard Analyses.
• Communicate with other shift supervisors and Operations Manager.
• Maintain a clean, safe work area.
• Complete shift paperwork.
• Assist in production as needed.
• Authorization Training in Lockout/Tagout, Machine Guarding, Confined Space, Aerial, Loader, Bobcat, Forklift, and balers (in-house training).
• Maintain plant preventative maintenance program.
• Other duties as assigned.

The opportunity:

Oversee the processes and baling of incoming recycling materials so that outbound recycling materials are acceptable for sale to various brokers or mills. Assign and oversee execution of production, safety, and housekeeping duties. Actively participate in and encourage employee involvement in the Health and Safety Programs of Smurfit Westrock.

How you will impact Smurfit Westrock:

• Supervise production operations in accordance with plant policies and procedures for the plant.
• Train and coach operators.
• Conduct employee performance counseling.
• Responsible for shift schedule to include: workstation assignments, rotations, employee training, employee vacations, employee breaks, overtime assignment, back-up for absent employees, and temporary labor.
• Coordinate production startups, shutdowns, and changeovers.
• Coordinate with Operations Manager for appropriate staffing levels.
• Schedule and conduct shift meetings.
• Responsible for meeting shift production goals.
• Responsible for quality control. Make adjustments as necessary during shift to produce product within specifications. Reject product outside of specifications.
• Operate within standard operating procedures (SOPs) and Job Hazard Analysis (JHAs).
• Communicate with other Shift Supervisors and the Operations Manager.
• Ensure a clean and safe work area.
• Complete shift paperwork.
• Assist in production as necessary.
• Authorization Training in the following: Lockout/Tagout, Machine Guarding, Confined Space, Aerial, Loader, Bobcat, Forklift, and balers. (Will be trained in-house)
• Maintain and aid the plant’s preventative maintenance program.

Other duties as assigned.

What you need to succeed:

• Basic reading, writing, and arithmetic skills required. This is normally acquired through a high school diploma or equivalent.
• Knowledge of the recycling processes, procedures, and machinery. This is normally acquired through two to five years of manufacturing experience.
• Manual dexterity required for operating machinery and computers.
• Working conditions include a non-climate-controlled environment.
• Communication with diverse staff.
• Work involves lifting materials and products to 45 pounds.
• Machinery operation requires the use of safety equipment including but not limited to: eye safety glasses, hearing protectors, work boots, and hard hats
