Job summary

Smurfit Westrock is seeking a shift supervisor to oversee recycling material baling and production processes. You will train operators, manage shifts, and ensure safety and quality standards are met throughout the operation.

You will coordinate startups/shutdowns, maintain documentation, and work with the Operations Manager to optimize staffing and productivity in a non-climate-controlled plant environment in Kentucky.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• 2–5 years of manufacturing experience.
• Knowledge of recycling processes, procedures, and machinery.
• Ability to lift up to 45 pounds and operate safety equipment.
• Work in a non-climate-controlled environment and communicate with diverse staff.

Responsibilities

• Oversee production processes and baling of incoming materials.
• Assign and oversee production, safety, and housekeeping duties.
• Train and coach operators; conduct performance counseling.
• Manage shift schedule, staffing levels, and vacation/ breaks.
• Coordinate startups, shutdowns, and changeovers; schedule meetings.
• Meet shift production goals and ensure quality control within specs.
• Follow SOPs and JHAs; communicate with other supervisors and the Operations Manager.
• Maintain a clean and safe work area; complete shift paperwork.
• Assist in production as needed; participate in Preventive Maintenance.
• Authorization training in Lockout/Tagout, Machine Guarding, Confined Space, Aerial, Loader, Bobcat, Forklift, balers.

Job description

The opportunity:

Oversee the processes and baling of incoming recycling materials so that outbound recycling materials are acceptable for sale to various brokers or mills. Assign and oversee execution of production, safety, and housekeeping duties. Actively participate in and encourage employee involvement in the Health and Safety Programs of Smurfit Westrock.

How you will impact Smurfit Westrock:

• Supervise production operations in accordance with plant policies and procedures for the plant.
• Train and coach operators.
• Conduct employee performance counseling.
• Responsible for shift schedule to include: workstation assignments, rotations, employee training, employee vacations, employee breaks, overtime assignment, back-up for absent employees, and temporary labor.
• Coordinate production startups, shutdowns, and changeovers.
• Coordinate with Operations Manager for appropriate staffing levels.
• Schedule and conduct shift meetings.
• Responsible for meeting shift production goals.
• Responsible for quality control. Make adjustments as necessary during shift to produce product within specifications. Reject product outside of specifications.
• Operate within standard operating procedures (SOPs) and Job Hazard Analysis (JHAs).
• Communicate with other Shift Supervisors and the Operations Manager.
• Ensure a clean and safe work area.
• Complete shift paperwork.
• Assist in production as necessary.
• Authorization Training in the following: Lockout/Tagout, Machine Guarding, Confined Space, Aerial, Loader, Bobcat, Forklift, and balers. (Will be trained in-house)
• Maintain and aid the plant’s preventative maintenance program.

Other duties as assigned.

What you need to succeed:

• Basic reading, writing, and arithmetic skills required. This is normally acquired through a high school diploma or equivalent.
• Knowledge of the recycling processes, procedures, and machinery. This is normally acquired through two to five years of manufacturing experience.
• Manual dexterity required for operating machinery and computers.
• Working conditions include a non-climate-controlled environment.
• Communication with diverse staff.
• Work involves lifting materials and products to 45 pounds.
• Machinery operation requires the use of safety equipment including but not limited to: eye safety glasses, hearing protectors, work boots, and hard hats
