Job summary

Schneider Electric is seeking a Mechanical Cooling Engineer in the United States to lead design and documentation of modular data center cooling systems, including DX refrigerant and chilled water solutions. Job description

The Cooling Systems Engineer plays a key role in designing the mechanical systems for our Modular Data Center solutions, including Cooling, Humidity Control, and Air Renovation Systems. This position involves coordinating and preparing all technical documentation for mechanical systems based on customer requirements, ensuring adherence to defined schedules and quality standards.

Attention to detail, an understanding of time constraints, and the implications of accurate documentation are essential for success in this role. As part of the engineering team, the Mechanical Cooling Engineer will collaborate closely with Project Managers, Technical Leaders, and Subject Matter Experts.

Key responsibilities include managing all Mechanical System documentation throughout the project lifecycle execution phase and providing ongoing support to factory personnel during the build, testing, and closeout processes. Additionally, the Mechanical Cooling Engineer will offer guidance and support to site integration and commissioning teams as required.

Responsibilities
  • Design and Review: Oversee and design mechanical cooling systems to meet customer requirements, focusing on:
    • Cooling Calculations: Perform heat load, cooling capacity, airflow, ventilation, humidity control, and pPUE calculations.
    • Equipment Selection: Choose appropriate mechanical equipment, including coolers, heaters, humidifiers, dehumidifiers, ERVs, and ventilation fans.
    • Documentation:
      • Develop mechanical schedules and piping one-lines.
      • Create system sequences of operations.
      • Document changes to maintain proper revision control.
    • CFD Simulation: Utilize Schneider IT Design CFD (training provided) for airflow modeling.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with cross-functional teams (SMEs and Designers) to develop layout designs and attend customer meetings to discuss design requirements.
  • Standards Compliance: Ensure all components meet national and international standards and adhere to internal processes and design reviews.
  • Support and Feedback: Provide technical support to factory production and site integration teams, addressing Requests for Information and offering onsite assistance as needed. Contribute to project lessons learned processes.
  • Travel: Occasional travel may be required, up to 15%.
Educational Requirements
  • Degree: B.S. in Mechanical Engineering (HVAC or Thermal Dynamics preferred).
Preferred Experience
  • Work Experience: 2+ years in cooling system design and implementation, particularly in the data center industry.
  • System Design: Proven experience in designing and troubleshooting:
    • DX Refrigerant Systems
    • Chilled Water Systems
    • Economizer Systems (Air Side, Water Side, Refrigerant)
    • Airflow Management Systems
    • Experience with Liquid Cooling Systems is a plus.
  • Standards Knowledge: Familiarity with industry standards (TC9.9, Uptime Tier Topology, etc.), Energy Codes (IECC, ASHRAE 90.1, 90.4), International Building Codes (IBC, IMC), and Refrigerant Safety Codes.
  • Software Proficiency: Experience with Autodesk REVIT, Autodesk Construction Cloud, and Bluebeam is essential.

  • Technical Expertise: Strong knowledge of refrigerant DX system theory and detailed design of chilled water systems.
  • Data Center Knowledge: Understanding of data center airflow management architecture and cooling solutions.

  • Collaboration: Ability to work with subcontractors and specialists for seamless project execution.

For this U.S. based position, the expected pay range is USD 68,000 - USD 102,000 per year. This pay range includes base pay and short-term incentives. The compensation range for this full-time position applies to candidates located within the United States. Our pay ranges are determined by reviewing roles of similar responsibility and level. Within the pay range, individual pay is determined by several factors including performance, knowledge, job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
