Job summary

The Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs is seeking a Cook I for the Quincy Veterans’ Home. This role handles large-scale meal preparation in the Dietary Unit, ensuring meals meet dietary standards, safety, and facility procedures.

Responsibilities include cooking for residents and staff, operating kitchen equipment, and maintaining sanitation while supporting health and daily care for Illinois Veterans.

Qualifications

• Requires completion of high school or equivalent and six months of cooking experience.
• Requires valid Food Service Sanitation Certificate or Certified Food Protection Manager certification.

Responsibilities

• Prepare and cook meals on a large scale for residents and staff.
• Operate standard kitchen equipment (mixers, steam cookers, toasters, choppers, ovens, kettles).
• Assist in kitchen inspections and ensure supplies meet needs.
• Serve resident meals according to menu and diets with proper portions and sanitation.
• Assist with receiving, handling and storage of food; ensure cleaning supplies are available.
• Complete required training and assist in supervising kitchen operations.
