Job summary

City Rescue Mission of Lansing is seeking a dependable Cook to serve 250+ guests per meal and help maintain a safe, organized kitchen. The role requires adherence to food safety standards, ability to multitask, and a compassionate approach when interacting with guests and volunteers.

The position offers full-time hours with a structured schedule in a faith-based, community-focused environment. The Cook will work under the Food Services Manager, ensuring donations are used efficiently and meals

Qualifications

• High School Diploma is required.
• ServSafe certification or ability to obtain within 90 days of employment is required.
• Commercial cooking or catering experience is preferred.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Prep, cook, and complete meals for 250+ guests following pre-assigned menus/recipes, independently or with staff/volunteers.
• Assist with menu planning and adapt meals based on available donations.
• Adapt recipes for large quantities with accurate measurements and store recipes for future use.
• Follow ServSafe rules to ensure food safety for all meals leaving the kitchen.
• Maintain a clean, sanitary workstation and organize the kitchen area.
• Oversee donations, sort storage areas, and complete cleaning tasks as needed.
• Be a good steward of donations, adapting planned meals to reduce waste and oversee volunteers.
• Show the love of Christ, be ready to share the gospel, and pray with guests.

Job Overview

This role is vital
The
Cook
either helps prepare or entirely prepares the dinner for the 250+ guests we serve. The Cook must have an excellent grasp on food safety, multitask well, and be able to maintain a clean and organized workstation under pressure. The Cook must be friendly and encouraging while maintaining policy, food safety requirements, and procedures with consistency and firmness. The Cook must also be able to complete tasks independently and accurately, meeting deadlines every time.

The Cook needs to be available from 9am to 5pm. The Cook may be required to fill additional Food Service shifts that fall before or after standard 1st shift hours. Holidays and Weekends as Scheduled, Rotation. Full or Part-Time Available.

Responsibilities and Duties

• Prep, Cook, and Complete Meals for 250+ guests following the pre-assigned menu/recipes, both independently and with other staff and volunteers.

• Assist with the menu as needed, maintaining a grasp on current donations and adapting as necessary.

• Adapt recipes to large quantities, ensuring accurate measurements. Documenting and storing recipes for future use.

• Follow ServSafe rules/procedures ensuring food safety for all meals leaving the kitchen.

• Maintain a clean and sanitary workspace, cleaning and organizing as you work.

• Process donations, organize and sort storage spaces, and complete a myriad of cleaning tasks as needed/assigned.

• Be a good steward of donations, adapting planned meals as needed to reduce waste
• Oversee volunteers, ensuring their time is used wisely and to the benefit of the City Rescue Mission
• Show the love of Christ, be ready to share the gospel, and pray with guests

• Be ready at all times to give an answer of the Hope that lies within the committed follower of Christ, as outlined in the Christian Bible, with gentleness and respect (1 Peter 3:15).

• Commit to continual training under those called to teach the doctrines of the faith and the Word of God, as well as to seek out fellowship with other believers (Hebrews 10:24-25), as evidenced by being a member in good standing in a local evangelical church.

Environment

The Cook will need to be able to consistently work in a noisy and distraction-filled environment. The Cook’s task will occasionally require them to work in low temperatures, high temperatures, outdoor elements (e.g. rain, wind, snow), and small/enclosed spaces.

Physical Requirements

The below listed abilities are required to be able to complete the essential duties of the role: The cook will constantly need to be able to lift 25lbs in all directions and will occasionally need to lift 50lbs in all directions. They will need to be able to complete 3+ hours of physically taxing work without a break and stand or walk for 3+hours without sitting down. The Cook will need to be able to constantly complete visual scans of indoor/outdoor areas in varying levels of light. They will need to occasionally complete tasks with repetitive motions that include the wri sts, hands and/or fingers. They will need to be able to constantly communicate clearly with others to exchange information.
