Job summary

The Veterans Home at Holyoke, part of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, is seeking a Cook for its Dietary Department. This full-time role (40 hours/wk, 10:00 AM–6:30 PM) includes an alternating weekend and holiday schedule and serves veterans and staff with nutritious meals prepared from standardized recipes.

Responsibilities include preparing meals per diet orders, checking trays, assisting with storage and waste reduction, supervising staff when needed, and adhering to ServSafe standards.

The Veterans Home at Holyoke is seeking a talented and skilled individual to join our Dietary Department as a Cook. The ideal candidate is passionate about building meaningful relationships and can provide outstanding service to our veteran and staff populations.

Schedule:

This is a full-time position, 40 hours per week, working 10:00 AM to 6:30 PM. It includes an alternating weekend and holiday schedule.

Duties and Responsibilities (please note that this list is not all-inclusive):
  • Follows standardized recipes and special diet orders, preparing sufficient quantities to meet all service requirements.
  • Checks trays for accuracy of diets, preferences, and quality before they are delivered. Serves on tray line and delivers carts to floors as needed.
  • Assists in receiving and storing food and supplies to prevent waste and assure quality products. Dates, labels, and stores items properly. Uses proper food handling techniques.
  • Supervises the kitchen staff when needed
  • Assists in cleaning as required
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor
Required Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of the methods and techniques used in the handling, preparation and cooking of food
  • Knowledge of correct sanitary procedures for kitchen equipment
  • Ability to read recipes and measure accordingly
  • Knowledge of ServSafe standards
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to deal tactfully with others, to include ability to supervise and assign work to staff
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Ability to supervise staff when necessary
  • Knowledge to utilize leftovers to reduce food waste
  • Knowledge of weights and measures
  • Ability to use slicer, meat grinder, blender, kettles, oven, grill, broaster, etc.

Minimum Entrance Requirements:

Applicants must have at least (A) one year of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in the preparation and cooking of food in a hotel, restaurant, cafeteria, catering firm, government or private institution, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.

Substitutions: I. A diploma or certificate from a recognized trade, technical or vocational school, at high school level or higher, with a major in culinary arts, food services or food trades may be substituted for the required experience.
