Job summary

Veterans Inc. seeks a cook to prepare and serve meals per program needs at Worcester and Shrewsbury locations. The role reports to the Food Services Manager and requires adhering to dietary requirements and established production procedures.

Responsibilities include supervising serving lines, maintaining sanitation, and assisting with inventory and special events, including evenings or weekends. A CS cert and background check are required, with opportunities for growth.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; Culinary Arts Certificate preferred.
  • Minimum of two years’ experience in the Food Services Industry.
  • ServSafe Certification required.
  • Ability to cater to groups of up to 300 people.
  • Must pass a CORI/Background check.
  • Vaccination policy compliance.

  • Determine amount and availability of food and supplies.
  • Set steam table and ensure proper serving for tray line or dining room.
  • Comply with sanitation and health standards.
  • Observe proper food handling techniques.
  • Store food properly with date labeling.
  • Assist with inventory checks and record-keeping to meet standards.
  • Assist with bi-weekly food pantry and special events, including evenings or weekends.

Job description

With the belief that they were there when we needed them, so we must be there now that they need us, Veterans Inc., the largest provider of supportive services to Veterans and their families in New England is seeking to fill the Cook position and become a valued member of the Veterans Inc. team!

This position is under the general supervision of the Food Services Manager. The cook will be responsible for preparing and serving meals according to the needs of program participants with all dietary requirements.

This position is split between our Worcester and Shrewsbury locations; weekends will be rotated for full‑time staff.

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING DAY TO DAY
  • Prepare or direct preparation of food served using established production procedures and systems.
    • Determine amount, type and availability of food and supplies required.
    • Set steam table; serve or ensure proper serving of food for tray line or dining room.
  • Comply with established sanitation standards, personal hygiene, and health standards.
  • Observe proper food preparation and handling techniques.
  • Store food properly and safely, marking date and item.
  • Report necessary equipment repair and maintenance to supervisor.
  • Assist with periodic inventory checks and perform other functions such as maintaining records to comply with Veterans Inc., government, state, and local standards.
  • Assist with bi‑weekly food pantry.
  • Assist with food services for special events as assigned, occasionally on evenings or weekends.
WHAT YOU MUST HAVE
  • Minimum of high school diploma or equivalent required. Culinary Arts Certificate, or other related fields, preferred.
  • Minimum of two years’ experience in the Food Services Industry.
  • ServSafe Certification required.
  • Ability and skill to cater to groups of up to 300 people.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a CORI/Background records check.
  • Compliance with Veterans Inc. COVID-19 Vaccination Policy. Religious and Medical Exemptions are considered.
