UChicago Medicine is seeking a Cook for our Hyde Park campus to join a world-class academic healthcare system. This 100% onsite role supports patient and retail food service, ensuring quality, safety, and timely meals.

The Cook will follow recipes, prepare items for service, maintain sanitation, and help with staff training and department procedures. Shift is 2nd (12:30 p.m. – 9 p.m.), 40 hours per week, at the Relief Cook building.

Qualifications

  • High School graduate or GED required.
  • 2-3 years of food production experience.
  • Able to read, write, and follow instructions.
  • Leadership and knowledge of institutional food service and safe handling.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares all food items needed for meal service, ensuring quality and proper temperature.
  • Prepares menu items according to recipes and forecasted quantities.
  • Cover, label, date, and store products to maintain quality.
  • Maintain safety and sanitation standards and proper equipment use.
  • Assist in orientation of new staff and participate in in-services.
  • May assist with clerical tasks such as answering phones and record-keeping.

Job Description

Be part of a world-class academic healthcare system, UChicago Medicine, as a Cook at our Hyde Park medical campus. This position is a 100% onsite opportunity. You will need to be based in the greater Chicagoland area.

In this role, the Cook is responsible for the quality, timing, and control of all foods produced for patient and retail services. Responsible for assuring safe, efficient, and sanitary operation of the area.

Essential Job Functions
  • Prepares all food items needed for meal service, ensuring quality, nutritional value, and appropriate temperature according to department standards.
  • Prepares menu items in accordance with quantities forecasted or tallied quantities and follows established recipes at all times.
  • Cover, label, date, and store all products properly to maintain quality according to department guidelines.
  • Maintains safety and sanitation standards of the department to ensure food quality, including thorough cleaning before and after each assignment, trash collection and disposal, and operating departmental equipment.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of safety procedures and practices in work area as indicated by lack of injury or incident.
  • Follows established food handling practices according to department standards to maintain sanitation and infection control by wearing gloves, hair coverings and clean uniforms.
  • Maintains accurate production, usage, and temperature records.
  • Assists in the orientation of new staff members in the department by demonstrating basic duties of the job.
  • May assist with clerical services such as answering phones and maintaining accurate production, usage and temperature records.
  • Attends and actively participates in department in-services and unit/department meetings.
  • Participates in identification and resolution of quality problems.
  • Assumes responsibility for knowing and practicing policies and procedures for infection control, fire safety, disaster and general sanitation and safety principles.
  • Demonstrates flexibility with additional duties and assignments to achieve the department's and hospital's goals.
  • Complies with dress code.
  • Performs other duties assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • High School Graduate or GED equivalent from an accredited body
  • 2-3 years of food production experience
  • Must be able to read, write, use simple math, and follow oral and written instructions
  • Leadership, knowledge of institutional foods, modified diet preparation, as well as knowledge of safe, sanitary food handling
