JASPER is seeking a qualified machinist to operate manual lathes and use basic hand tools. You will read specifications, determine machining steps, and set up equipment to meet precise tolerances. The role emphasizes accuracy, safety, and maintaining machine condition throughout shifts.
The position runs Monday–Friday 6:30am–3:00pm with overtime, starting at $20.00 per hour, plus benefits and ongoing wage progression within the first years.
There are a variety of tasks this position completes, including operating manual lathes and using basic hand tools. First, a machinist must begin the process by checking the specifications and readouts for the parts at hand. This operator then must make decisions on the type of machining or polishing processes needed to meet specifications. They calculate how to shape the piece of metal or other material that is being worked on and decide what tools will be needed. Next, machinists place the work piece on the equipment of choice and set the controls to make the cuts. While the machining process is taking place, machinists watch carefully for any problems. They monitor the speed and heat of the machine and must be capable of learning how to perform basic maintenance of the machine. Associates must be detail oriented.
