Job summary

FORT is hiring an Applied AI Engineer – Conversational Intelligence in New York City. You will own the end-to-end conversational intelligence layer, turning natural-language requests into real-world actions, and ship reliable AI-powered experiences for consumer discovery and booking.

You’ll work on a small, fast-moving team with a focus on accuracy, user outcomes and product quality. Strong TS/Python skills and a track record of shipping AI-driven features are required.

Qualifications

• 3+ years of experience as a backend or full-stack software engineer.
• Experience shipping consumer-facing products, not only internal tools or B2B software.
• Experience taking LLM-powered ranking, retrieval, search or recommendation systems into production.
• Experience building systems where a model interprets user preferences and surfaces relevant results.

Responsibilities

• Own the complete agent architecture, including prompt systems, tool calling, multi-step reasoning and streaming.
• Develop Conversational state, memory and preference-recall infrastructure.
• Lead LLM-powered ranking, retrieval and personalised recommendations.
• Ensure multi-turn reliability with refinement loops, error recovery and graceful degradation.
• Build the rendering layer between agent outputs and the consumer-facing product.
• Define model-provider strategy across platforms (OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini).
• Implement structured outputs, caching, routing and fallback behaviour.
• Create evaluation infrastructure for agent, retrieval and recommendation quality.
