Job description

Spectrum Solutions, Inc. is seeking an experienced Controls Technician / Operator to support the United States Military Academy (USMA) at West Point, New York. This position is responsible for the operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and optimization of the Academy's campus-wide Energy Management Control System (EMCS), Building Automation Systems (BAS), and associated HVAC control systems.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Operate, monitor, and maintain the installation‑wide Energy Management Control System (EMCS) and Building Automation Systems (BAS).
• Perform preventive maintenance inspections and testing of control systems, field devices, controllers, operator workstations, servers, and associated network infrastructure.
• Diagnose and repair failures involving HVAC controls, sensors, actuators, variable frequency drives, control panels, communication networks, and related equipment.
• Respond to routine, urgent, and emergency service calls in accordance with contractual response requirements.
• Investigate system alarms, equipment failures, occupant comfort issues, and control system deficiencies.
• Generate corrective maintenance recommendations, service order documentation, and repair proposals.
• Install, configure, commission, and troubleshoot DDC controllers and field devices.
• Modify control sequences, graphics, schedules, trends, alarms, and databases as directed.
• Perform controller backups, database maintenance, software updates, and system documentation updates.
• Maintain accurate maintenance records, inspection reports, service documentation, and operational logs.
• Participate in customer meetings, system walkthroughs, project coordination meetings, and quality control activities.
• Coordinate activities with Government representatives, facility personnel, subcontractors, and other trades.
• Provide technical support and recommendations for system improvements, modernization efforts, and operational optimization.
• Provide technical leadership and guidance to other controls technicians and support personnel as required.
• Adhere to all company, customer, OSHA, EM 385‑1‑1, and site‑specific safety requirements.

Required Qualifications

• Minimum five (5) years of experience working with Building Automation Systems, Direct Digital Controls, or Energy Management Control Systems.
• Demonstrated experience troubleshooting and maintaining HVAC control systems in commercial, institutional, industrial, military, healthcare, or higher education facilities.
• Experience with one or more major BAS platforms including Tridium Niagara, Honeywell, Distech Controls, or similar systems.
• Working knowledge of HVAC systems, control theory, sequence of operations, and building mechanical systems.
• Experience with BACnet/IP, BACnet MS/TP, Modbus, LonWorks, TCP/IP networking, and related communication protocols.
• Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, control drawings, sequences of operation, and specifications.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to interact professionally with Government personnel, customers, subcontractors, and internal team members.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining a high level of accountability and professionalism.
• Strong troubleshooting and analytical problem‑solving skills with the ability to identify root causes and develop effective corrective actions.
• Ability to prepare accurate maintenance reports, service documentation, and technical recommendations.
• Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record.
• Ability to obtain and maintain installation access and any required security credentials.

Preferred Qualifications

• Niagara Advanced Certification.
• Experience supporting large campus environments, military installations, healthcare facilities, or university campuses.
• Experience supporting Department of Defense (DoD), Federal Government, military, or other high‑security facilities.
• Previous experience serving as a Lead Controls Technician, Site Lead, Foreman, or similar leadership role.
• Experience mentoring, training, and developing junior controls technicians.
• Experience coordinating maintenance activities across multiple facilities and managing workload priorities for a team of technicians.
• Demonstrated ability to lead troubleshooting efforts and coordinate resources during critical system outages or emergency response situations.
• Experience planning and executing preventive maintenance programs for large‑scale building automation systems.
• Experience preparing technical proposals, service order recommendations, and customer‑facing reports.
• Knowledge of server administration, virtual environments, and cybersecurity best practices related to industrial control systems.
• Experience performing BAS commissioning, retro‑commissioning, and system optimization.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to climb ladders, work in mechanical rooms, ceilings, rooftops, and confined equipment spaces.
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to stand, walk, bend, and kneel for extended periods.
• Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.

This position is primarily field‑based and supports facilities throughout the United States Military Academy (USMA) at West Point. Work will include occupied buildings, utility facilities, mechanical rooms, administrative spaces, academic buildings, barracks, and other mission‑critical facilities. Occasional after‑hours, weekend, and emergency response work may be required.
