Job summary

Vertical Mechanical Group is seeking a skilled Controls Technician to join our growing HVAC and building automation team in Sterling, VA. You will install, maintain, and troubleshoot control systems for commercial and residential equipment, working with PLCs, BAS, and SCADA platforms to ensure reliable operation.

We value strong analytical skills, collaborative communication, and hands-on experience with Schneider, Siemens, JCI, or NAVSys controls.

Responsibilities

The Opportunity

VMG is seeking a skilled and motivated Controls Technician to join our team.

This role is critical to the successful installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of control automation systems for HVAC equipment in both commercial and residential environments. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of HVAC and controls systems, including PLCs, Building Automation Systems (BAS), and SCADA platforms.

What You'll DoControls & Building Automation

• Install, maintain, and troubleshoot control automation systems for commercial and residential HVAC equipment
• Understand equipment control functions through PLCs within BAS (Building Automation Systems) or SCADA platforms
• Perform calibration, configuration, servicing, and maintenance of control systems and their subsystems
• Use system diagnostic tools to perform routine updates, troubleshoot issues, and resolve problems efficiently

Technical & Field Support

• Read and interpret schematic diagrams to understand system designs and operations
• Work effectively in a fast-paced environment, both independently and with team and management support
• Maintain knowledge of and experience with Schneider, JCI, Siemens, Pritchett, or NAVSys control systems or platforms

What We're Looking For

• Proven knowledge and understanding of HVAC and controls systems
• Familiarity with PLCs, BAS, or SCADA platforms
• Prior experience in controls systems or a related field
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
• Ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively

Preferred Qualifications

• BACnet or MODBUS certifications
• Niagara Certification
• Experience with CoolAutomation systems
