Job summary

Magna is seeking a Control Technician to design, develop, and install PLC-based control systems for automation equipment. You will troubleshoot PLC issues, create electrical schematics and documentation, and participate in machine startup and commissioning with cross-functional teams.

The role requires experience with Allen Bradley PLCs, RSLogix, and vision systems, plus strong problem-solving and communication skills. On-site, steady hours, union-friendly environment in Michigan.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree or equivalent experience required.
  • Electrical/Electronic/Mechatronic degree or trades qualification preferred.
  • Familiar with Allen Bradley PLC controls including RSLogix500/RSLogix5000 and PanelView/PanelView Plus.
  • Experience reading schematics and technical documents is essential.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop and install new PLC-based control systems for machinery.
  • Provide production support by troubleshooting PLC-related issues.
  • Create and update wiring diagrams, functional specs and design documentation.
  • Test machine functionality and assist in startup and commissioning.
  • Collaborate with Manufacturing Engineers and maintenance staff to ensure reliability.

Job responsibilities
Essential duties and responsibilities
  • Responsible for the design, development and installation of new plc based control systems.
  • Provides production support by trouble shooting and resolving machine PLC related issues.
  • Produce and update documents including work/user instructions, functional specifications, detailed design specifications, electrical and pneumatic schematics, etc.
  • Conduct machine functionality and fault recovery testing and participates in project startup and machine commissioning.
  • Work collaboratively with Manufacturing Engineers, Maintenance Technicians, Production Supervisors and other internal staff.
  • Reports all unsafe and unhealthy conditions, as well as injuries, accidents, illnesses, near misses and property damage immediately to management.
  • Complies with all Health, Safety and Environmental standards in accordance with the Magna Employee Charter, the Occupational Health & Safety Act. And the Michigan Occupational Health & Safety Act.
  • If there is any reason to believe that any equipment, physical condition of the workplace or assigned task is likely to jeopardize customer's requirements, internal requirements or the quality of tests results and/or equipment build, notify management immediately.
  • Authorities as detailed in our Quality System for ISO/TS16949 2009 including but not limited to Corrective and Preventative Actions, Control of Documents, Control of Records, Internal Audits and Control of Nonconforming Product
Experience
  • Electrical control system design, PLC programming and troubleshooting,
  • Strong MS Office skills,
  • willing to work overtime as per job requirements.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience as a Control Tech preferred.
  • Knowledge of industrial networks. (DeviceNet, EthernetIP)
  • Familiar with Vision Systems (Keyence, Cognex, Omron)
  • Basic knowledge of the use of electrical devices (i.e. proximity switches, load cells, LVDT's, signal conditioners, etc.)
  • Ability to read and understand technical documents, schematic design specification.
  • Excellent written & oral communication, as well as analytical & problem solving skills.
Education / Certification / Licence

Associate Degree or equivalent experience.

Electrical/Electronic/Mechatronic or similar Engineering degree/diploma/certificate or Trades Qualification and significant equivalent work experience.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

Team oriented, communicates well with others and able to interact with people at all levels and departments.

Excellent time management skills.

Ability to successfully complete multiple tasks.

Demonstrated ability to facilitate meetings.

Basic electrical and motor controls, Allen Bradley PLC controls, including RSLogix500 and RSLogix5000 platforms, RSLogix, Panelview and Panelview Plus HMI applications, IFM and Keyence inspection camera applications.

Proficient in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
